My amazing momma turned 50 earlier this week. And while her pure beauty actively refutes her physical aging, she remains wise beyond her years. About a year ago I started writing "lessons from my momma" in the notes app on my phone. Now being in college, hours away, I find myself using them everyday. Here are some of my favorites:
Google Calendar:
Mom is easily the most organized person I know, she has our entire family’s agenda color coded and organized on a shared google calendar. Mom doesn't miss a single soccer game, birthday, or doctor's appointment. Her organization is a prime example of her sincere intentionality. Be like mom.
Peace Pantry:
Mom officially founded a non-profit today. She dedicates hours of her life to help the local community. Her impact has been so tremendous. I don't even think she understands how significant her service is to the community. Her dedication to volunteering is an example of her golden heart. Be like mom.
TJ Maxx and Marshalls:
Mom is the world's best shopper, she finds the best deals and lives at TJ Maxx and Marshalls. I loved walking into my room to find a little gift on my bed when she knew I needed it. She taught me the power of a groupon as opposed to overpriced clothing. Her detachment from materialistic objects exemplifies her down to earth spirit. Be like mom.
The revolving door:
Mom is extremely hospitable. She welcomes all into her house and judges none. She loves deeply and has become a listening ear to anyone who needs it. Her Italian character tries to feed everyone. My friends always have a place in our home. Her hospitality exemplifies her outpouring of love onto all. Be like mom.
A shoulder to cry on:
Mom is always in my corner. She listens intently and loves fiercely. I rest easily knowing that my mom will never not be my best friend. I want to be that person for my friends and eventually children. Her reliability is a testament to her loyalty. Be like mom.
A Lover:
The way in which mom loves is truly admirable. She will be there no matter what. She is kind, patient, and passionate. She loves her husband, children, and friends so well. Mom is the first to make you soup when your sick or wish you a happy birthday or pick you up when you are feeling down. She sets an example for what love should look like and how it should be reciprocated. Love like mom.
Independent Woman:
Mom is strong. I don't think she understands how big of a role model she is to me. Her independence and ability to thrive confidently as herself does not go unnoticed. This independence sets a high standard of femininity to look up too. Be like mom.
Chasing Waterfalls:
Mom is constantly seeking adventure. She loves to hike and travel and see the world for all its parts. Mom appreciates spontaneity and has always been one to explore with. Her passion for living life to the fullest is a testament to her free spirit. Be like mom.
These are just a few silly lessons that I have learned from my sweet momma. When we surround ourselves with good people, there are always lessons to be learned. Pay attention to the wisdom people have. As humans, we are constantly learning, taking in new perspectives and ideas. Wisdom can come from our relationship with kids, friends, parents, professors, and grandparents. This entry is a quick little reminder to appreciate the values you can learn from others.
